Researching River Relations is Dirty Work!

Wann: 14.5.2025

Wo: Seminarraum 00.175, Tennenlohe, Wetterkreuz 15

There is growing interest in relational approaches to studying issues such as water and waste management and how these intersect community resilience. The engaged research which I will be presenting is based on a hands-on partnership between the university and River Rescue: a local river clean-up organisation in Makhanda, South Africa. The study sheds light on the nature and value of river relations for resilience. Three key questions guide the study: How do residents of Makhanda relate to the streams and rivers that run through the city? How are river relations changing, and what does this mean for social-ecological resilience? What are we learning from relational, place-based research in which students not only conduct research but engage in hands-on river clean-ups alongside community volunteers?
