RailVitaliTree: Tree vitality monitoring and modelling of drought-related risks along railroads using remote sensing and Dendroecology.
MSc. Nandini Hannak (Institut für Geographie, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Achim Bräuning
RailVitaliTree is an interdisciplinary joint project by the FAU, the German Centre for Rail Traffic Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Schienenverkehrsforschung, DZSF), the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD), and the private company Luftbild Umwelt Planung (LUP). The project aims to develop a system for monitoring tree vitality along railway tracks across Germany. As part of this project, increment cores of trees growing along railway tracks and in reference forest sites are collected, and ring width, wood anatomy and stable isotopes time series will be analysed in order to assess the climate response and drought impact on the trees. The results of the dendroecological analyses, in combination with local climate and soil moisture data and multispectral satellite and drone data will be used in order to develop an online tool with which potentially at-risk trees along railway tracks can be identified before they pose a risk for the rail traffic.
